Knives And Other Sharp Things – Easy Sharpening

With either of these two tools from Smith’s Abrasives you can sharpen a knife in seconds, not minutes.

Every knife owner will be faced, sooner or later, with a constantly dulling blade edge. When this presents itself, if steps aren’t taken to resolve the situation, then real personal danger awaits. This is because a dull blade responds to cutting pressure in an abnormal manner. When this occurs, the blade becomes uncontrollable and an accident can happen. Should such an occurrence take place deep in the backcountry, you’ll find yourself in a heap of trouble.

Solving the problem of a dull blade edge, even with a plethora of sharpening tools available, can be challenging for many. The situation is centered on the appropriate edge angle and how to achieve that angle. Freehand stone abrasion, without an angle guide, depends entirely on holding the blade at a consistent angle, which can be difficult for many to accomplish. Some types of sharpeners depend on a setup, which can place the blade at a precise sharpening angle. Unfortunately, multiple parts can often go missing at the precise moment they’re needed. And the final problem is all of this takes time and time is a valuable commodity when it relates to in-the-field game care.

Fortunately, the folks at Smith’s Abrasives have come up with a couple of tools that have simplified knife sharpening down to a matters of seconds and all without clamp-on blade edge guides and complicated, multi-component set-ups. The Jiffy-Pro Handheld Sharpener and the 2-Step Knife Sharpener can forever change the way you approach blade edge reestablishment. Using either tool is the easiest, quickest and most efficient way to solve the problem a dull blade edge.

The Jiffy-Pro Handheld Sharpener is a hand-held, molded plastic tool, into which a pair of tungsten carbide tips is set at a precise sharpening angle (no more guessing the sharpening angle). For use on straight edge, flat ground on both sides of the blade, this sharpener can be used on most knives (not intended for serrated or flat grind on one side of the blade). To sharpen the blade, simply place the knife down, blade up, on a flat surface. Engage the blade edge with the carbide tips and using downward pressure draw the sharpener from blade heel-to-tip. Repeat this action several times to achieve the desired sharpness. Finally, place the sharpener on a flat surface, with the paired ceramic rods facing up. Place the blade edge in between the rods; draw the blade forward heel-to- tip to smooth and hone of edge for optimal sharpness. In less than a minute, you’ll have an incredibly sharp knife and all without the time-consuming hassle of dealing with multiple components.

Smith’s 2-Step Knife Sharpener using similar technology combined with the convenience of a shirt pocket size tool. The same tungsten carbide tips and ceramic rods used in the larger Jiffy-Pro are also used in this smaller sharpening tool. The difference between the tools can be found in the way they are used. Instead of drawing the tool across the blade edge (as with the Jiffy-Pro), with the 2-Step Knife Sharpener you simply draw the blade edge from heel-to-tip through the preset angled carbide tips to set the edge, and then repeat the process with the ceramic rods for final honing. Both tools accomplish the same level of sharpness, the only difference is one is shirt pocket size; the other is much larger and possibly a little easier to use for some individuals.

The best part is that both tools, either the Jiffy-Pro or the 2-Step sharpener, are inexpensive. When you consider the price of other types of sharpeners, powered or manual, the acquisition of either of these two handy tools is a real bargain. What I like about these sharpeners is that they get the job done, quickly and easily! All too often, I’ve taken an animal when there was little time left in the day for complicated knife sharpening efforts. Faced with the possibility of having a dull knife slip in my hand and inflict a dangerous laceration, it’s comforting to know that I have the tool to restore that blade edge in seconds and that’s why I use both of these Smith’s products.
