A Piece of My Heart Stayed Behind

Teresa McCullough took this beautiful blue wildebeest in South Africa with Wild Wildebeest Lodge and entered it in the 2027 WGH Hunting Awards Photo Challenge.

This was her first African safari, and she encourages other women to give it a try in this brief description. She writes, “I went to Thabazimbi in South Africa on a ladies’ hunt that owner Mike Helbing put together. The Wild Wildebeest Lodge is a magical place!

“I saw so many animals and am thankful to have take two, a wildebeest and a blesbok. They hunt different there. We didn’t go out at “dark thirty” or hunt from a tree stand. We went after breakfast and after noon. We stalked some and rode around on the red dirt roads looking for animals we wanted to harvest. I saw so many animals, and I took it all in!

“I knew I wanted a wildebeest, and he was the first one I saw. I used a 308. My shot was perfect at a little over 200 yards. When I tell you I screamed like a girl, I did! I had happy tears over a dream come true. My animals fed the villages, and we all got to try our harvested meats. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared.

“The Wild Wildebeest lodge is top-notch. The staff were so gracious, thankful and friendly. They smiled all the time. I left a piece of my heart in Africa. Even though the flight is long, I would do it all over again!

“If you ever wanted to hunt Africa, do it! You won’t regret it.”

Teresa’s wildebeest qualifies her in the Africa category of the 2027 WGH Hunting Awards Photo Challenge. It could also count towards several of SCI’s World Hunting Awards, including the African 15 and 29, Animals of Africa and others.
