By Vicki Swan, Sables President
We all get our start in the outdoors from somewhere. Some of us earlier in life than others. When I married my husband, Bill, 45 years ago, I was a city girl. When he suggested we spend our vacation going on an Idaho bear hunt, I thought he had lost his mind! Riding horses for three hours and sleeping in a tent was not something I would ever do. But I was soon converted to an outdoor girl. I eventually became a hunting-retriever trainer who spent seven days a week outside in all weather conditions.
We all get our start from somewhere with SCI as an organization. My first SCI Convention was in the 1980s as an exhibitor. Now I am an SCI and SCIF Sables Life Member. I have been involved with Sables since 2005. I have served as the Sables President, Vice President, Treasurer and on numerous Sables committees, including the AWLS, Museum, Governance, Membership, Finance and Convention committees and others. To say that I am passionate about Sables and the mission of Sables would be an understatement.
The mission of Sables is to further the understanding of our outdoor heritage, including the positive role of hunting, through the creation and support of wildlife conservation education programs that are consistent with the educational mission and purposes of SCI and SCIF. I am proud to be a part of the effort to give our young people the opportunity to start their own journey into the great outdoors and to start their own journey with SCI, SCIF and Sables.
Serving one term so far as President of SCI Sables, as well as holding all my previous positions, I have had the privilege of working with extraordinary individuals who volunteer their time to preserve the future of conservation education and the role hunting plays in conservation. If you would like to become a volunteer and start your journey with Sables, contact Katie Robinson at [email protected] It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve Sables for so many years, and I look forward to what this next year has in store for us.
