SCI Bay Area Holds Seventh Annual Feed the Hungry Event

SCISanJoseDonationDropOff101613

San Jose members of the Bay Area Chapter proved their generosity again this year, as they celebrated National Hunting and Fishing Day by sharing the bounty of their freezers and their time with those in need.

Over 400 pounds of wild game was collected including – elk, deer, duck, pheasant, boar and fish. Jeff Stanley generously donated an entire (or more) side of beef, which was given to the Emmanuel House of San Jose, an in-house service of the Salvation Army.

On September 27, Jim Peters, Jeana Feige, Rich Pierce, Rich's son Connor, Beverly Valdez and I operated the kitchen successfully for a several hours. We served over 170 dinners to outside guests, plus 40 residents of Emmanuel House. The clientele made many positive comments, praising the food as a “restaurant quality meal” and “five star dinner‚Äù.

Rich shared some anecdotal stories regarding the positive impact of Emmanuel House on the lives of residents. Everyone commented on how great Connor was and that his smile was a bright light in many otherwise dreary days.

During the holiday season additional meals will be provided from our donation. — John Ware, Humanitarian Chair
