Hunting Camp Attacked in Mozambique’s Remote Niassa Region

Safari Club International has learned that a hunting camp in northern Mozambique was attacked, looted and burned late morning on Thursday, August 3.

A Security Alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique reports the lodge was located in the Niassa Special Reserve, but other sources place it just outside of the Reserve in the Niassa Province. Armed Forces of Mozambique were dispatched and are operating in the area. The attackers have not been identified, but a group of insurgents is known to operate in the neighboring Cabo Delgado Province.

Multiple news outlets have reported that three American hunting clients were evacuated by helicopter from the bush.

The U.S. Embassy in Maputo advises avoiding the border area between Niassa and Cabo Delgado Provinces and warns against travel to the Niassa Special Reserve. The U.S. State Department Travel website has posted a  Mozambique Travel Advisory.

Hunters may wish to contact their operators in Niassa and the Reserve to ensure camps are open and operating, and to discuss security and evacuation plans.
