Field Report: Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep

J. Alain Smith reports on a recent epic hunt in Oregon

With all the negative news going around these days was I excited to have a tag for a Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep in my pocket on August 1st!

As if that wasn’t special enough, we were going sheep hunting in one of the most incredible places in North America, Hell’s Canyon, Oregon! Camp was set up along the banks of the Snake River where we got in some fishing in between glassing the steep rocky cliffs looking for a monster ram.

Hell’s Canyon has produced some whoppers in the past so we were all excited when we finally spotted an unbelievable bruiser the afternoon before opening day hanging out with a group of four other rams.

The next morning at dawn we were back on the cliffs trying to find where the rams had ventured to overnight in the full moon. We found them laying on one of the rare flat spots in the cliffs, not far from where we had last seen them and now all we had to do was close the gap to a reasonable shooting distance.

My Gunwerks Clymer rifle in 7mm Rem Mag didn’t let me down and I was able to take this sheep of a lifetime at 300 yards.

Thanks to all the guys at Sheep Mountain Outfitters, and Bailey and Landrus for all their assistance on this unbelievable adventure.

It sure was relaxing and fun to get away from all the wacky stuff going on and spend some quality time in the outdoors and with good friends!
