On Wednesday, March 6, the House Subcommittee on Waters, Wildlife, and Fisheries held a legislative hearing on H.R. 7408, the America’s Wildlife Habitat Conservation Act (AWHCA). This legislation, sponsored by House Resources Committee Chairman and former SCI Legislator of the Year Bruce Westerman, invests $300 million to empower states to enact their wildlife action plans, and creates an off ramp for species recovered from endangered status, allowing states to manage their own recovered species. SCI thanks Chairman Westerman for this legislation and will continue to work with the Committee to advance the bill to the House floor.
On Thursday, March 7th, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held an oversight hearing titled “Monetizing Nature and Locking up Public Land: The Implications of Biden’s Strategy for Natural Capital Accounting”, continuing to examine the now withdrawn SEC proposal to create a new security with natural assets.
