Federal: Appropriations and ESA at 50

  1. Last week, the House Appropriations Committee held a markup on the FY24 Interior Appropriations bill and voted to approve. Several new amendments were adopted to the bill, including amendments from Congressman Zinke that will prevent the Administration from banning lead ammunition and fishing tackle on federal lands or waters for hunting or fishing activities unless certain conditions are met, and to delist the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) population of Grizzly Bears under the Endangered Species Act, respectively. SCI thanks the Committee for advancing this bill and looks forward to seeing it before the full House of Representatives following the August recess.

On Tuesday, July 18, the House Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries held an oversight hearing titled “ESA at 50: The Destructive Cost of the ESA.” SCI thanks Chairman Bentz and the Subcommittee for continuing to highlight the many flaws that are keeping the Endangered Species Act from fulfilling its intended purpose and we look forward to working with Congress to find legislative solutions.
