African PH’s Wife Hunts Her First Whitetail with WGH & Legends Ranch

Carolyn Guthrie was one of 14 women who received a Learn-to-Hunt experience at the Legends Ranch through SCI’s Women Go Hunting (WGH) program in early December. She won the trip after entering the WGH Sweepstakes at the SCI Convention in Nashville, TN. Just the year before she had won a rifle from WGH and got to hunt her very first whitetail deer with it at the Legends Ranch in Michigan. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

“I married a man with a great love for the outdoors and hunting. He is a professional hunter, PH, in Zimbabwe, and so I have been involved with the industry and enjoyed being involved in hunting but had not done much hunting myself.

“Going to the Legends Ranch with Women Go Hunting for the Learn-to-Hunt program there was an amazing opportunity, and I am so glad I had the chance to go! I wanted to learn and experience everything involved in a hunt, and white-tailed deer was a new animal for me. I also looked forward to enjoying this with a group of ladies and getting to make new friends.

“Wow! It was an amazing experience. The guides were very patient and helpful with us learning hunters; they were clearly passionate in what they do. They coached us on handling and shooting our weapons and were very patient while guiding us. The blinds were set up well (and warm!), even a novice could feel at ease hunting from them. The evening times spent socializing with others were special too.

“There were so many special and personalized touches that owner Robert Sergi and his team included in the experience, such as toasting to each animal taken and to the hunters, followed by a torch lighting ceremony in their honor. They also provided each hunter with personalized leather name tags and wooden placards. The staff took an interest in knowing us and ensured we had a wonderful time.

“The experience of actually taking a deer was great, especially with my new rifle. The Legends Ranch is a great place to be a first-time hunter. The fact that it was the group of us together, making new contacts and developing new friendships was an added bonus.

“I so appreciate the wonderful opportunity to go there for my first deer! It is a beautiful place, the program is well run and the staff is great. It was exciting and special, certainly a memorable experience.”
