A Blown Knee, A Steep Ravine and a Huge Bull Elk
Taylor Crosthwaite took this fantastic Rocky Mountain elk in the Jarbidge area of Nevada on a self-guided family hunt despite two members sustaining injuries that would have sent most people home! Crosthwaite entered her bull into the WGH Hunting Awards Challenge and sent in this description of her hunt.
“I was lucky to draw my Nevada elk tag with only two points! I drew it before I even had a deer tag in Nevada.
“My family and I had been hunting in and out of the wilderness areas for several days. I blew my knee, and my mom broke her arm that same day trying to start the side-by-side so that she could pick us up from hiking out of the wilderness.
“My uncle drove in the next night to help us out. He saw my bull crossing the road into a ravine below. We went there first thing the next morning to find he was with a big herd of cows and a smaller bull. I was by myself when he came out of the trees and stood perfectly broad side. One shot and he was down. The pack-out was pretty brutal, though, as it was straight up out of that ravine!
“I had him mounted with his cape rolled up and tied into a frame pack, as if we were packing him out again. It’s pretty unique!”
Postscript: Taylor’s elk qualifies her in the North America category of the 2027 WGH Hunting Awards Photo Challenge. It could also count towards several of SCI’s World Hunting Awards, including the North American 12 and 29, Elk of North America and numerous others.
