1 Big Thing: A Busy Week in Congress

On Tuesday, May 16, the House and Senate both held important hearings:

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing to consider the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Proposed 2024 budget. USFWS Director Martha Williams testified on behalf of the Service.

The House Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a hearing to consider the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Proposed 2024 budget. BLM Director Tracy Stone-Manning testified on behalf of the Bureau.

On Wednesday, May 17th, the House Committee on Natural Resources held a Full Committee Markup. Among other legislation, the H.R. 200, the FIR Act, was reported favorably out of committee. Last month, SCI joined AWCP in requesting a resolution to the ‘Cottonwood’ issue, and we thank Congressman Rosendale and the House Resources Committee for advancing this bill to address the problem.

Safari Club is proud to support the H.R. 1142, the Listing Reform Act, sponsored by Congressman August Pfluger. This legislation seeks to modernize the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and require consideration of economic impact before listing a new species. This represents an important step forward to creating an ESA that works for wildlife and humans. Learn more about Representative Pfluger’s bill here!
